    Culinary Use

In Bulgaria various meat and vegetable dishes, beans, lentils, soups and salads are spiced with garden savory (Satureja hortensis). Traditionally it is added to dishes at the end of cooking so that it does not lose its aroma. Some of the most popular Bulgarian dishes prepared with savory are meatballs, bean soup, pork with beans, chicken with potatoes, moussaka, lentils and red meat stew. It is a key ingredient in our Shopski spice mix, part of Taste of Bulgaria series.

Balkan savory (Satureja montana) is used mainly for preparing tea.

Savory is also used in French cuisine and is one of the ingredients in the popular Herbes de Provence spice mix.

    Health Benefits

Savory is rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, C, K, calcium, iron and magnesium. It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
